Approach

Odyssey (a company I founded) included a host of social and collaboration tools to turn any Unreal Engine project (for architecture, design, marketing, etc) into a multiplayer social experience. Because Odyssey was cloud streamed to a browser, all of these features were able to be designed and implemented by me for a normal frontend JS environment. Some of the features I designed UI/UX for included:

  • Avatar creation system
  • Spatial audio, screensharing, and webcams
  • In-game chat, sharing, and user management

I was involved in every level of design process, where I conducted user interviews, created product strategy for features, delivered wireframes for team review, collaborated with our creative director on final visuals that followed our visual guidelines, and then prototyped interactions directly in frontend codebase.

In the case of spatial audio I also ideated and delivered the initial prototype of streaming 3D data from Unreal Engine and pushing it into a three.js renderer on the frontend, to create a parallel “media-only” render solution that allowed our team to spatialize media object.

I also frequently would prototype solutions for spatial components in Unity to act as a reference point for artists and engineers.

Results

  • My design work on spatial webcams was highlighted by Dolby’s CEO during Dolby Earnings Call ‘22.
  • Major brands like Intuit, Medtronic, L’Oreal, Dell, Dolby, Boeing, Colgate, McDonald’s, and Pfizer all heavily utilized these features in their activations on platform.
